It has been quite the task, to compete for the girls’ undivided attention, with the arrival of the much anticipated 2009 school magazine. I hope that in a few days, you will be able to pry the magazine from your daughters’ and enjoy sharing in the memories, successes and celebrations of 2009. A magazine of this high standard is as a result of many hours of collating and proof reading by Mrs Terry and Mrs Milner. We thank them for all their input and will allow them only a short breath before they get started on the 2010 issue.
On Thursday 29 July, the Grade Sixes sat the IEB Grade 6 Core Skills Assessments. English, Mathematics and cross curricular skills and knowledge are integrated in problem solving type questions. These questions are specifically designed to assess the cognitive levels at which the girls are functioning and assist the staff in improving the delivery of the curriculum and facilitate our future planning. The tests will be marked internally, using IEB memorandums, and then submitted to the IEB for moderation and evaluation feedback. We anticipate that the results will be made available in November.
Parents are invited to join the staff and girls at the annual Grade 4-7 Interhouse hockey that will take place on Monday afternoon from 14h30-16h30. Girls are reminded that it is a compulsory event. It is essential that all girls wear their Games kit and house T-shirt. Team and match details have been communicated to the classes during homeroom. I urge all girls to show good sportsmanship and make the event a successful one! May the best house win- but let’s all have fun!
The EMS teachers and our budding entrepreneurs are working industriously on their business plans and market research in preparation for our market that will form part of Spring Day on the 18th September. In the coming week your daughters will be approaching you for a loan to assist them in raising the capital needed to start up their businesses. You will be asked to sign a loan agreement in which you will be able to negotiate the terms and conditions of the loan, should there be a default in payment. I encourage parents to notgive their daughters more money than requested in the loan, as this will ensure that all companies go in to Market Day with an equal opportunity to make a profit.
Your help is needed….If there are any parents that run their own businesses, are entrepreneurs or have business experiences, and are interested in becoming involved in short workshops or willing to share their stories with the girls in the last week of term, 16-20 August, kindly email me at gjohnstone@standrews.co.za for more information about the exciting week we have planned for the girls and how you can become involved.

Kelsey Devonport and her brother Keagan, worked for 2 hours on Nelson Mandela’s birthday picking up litter in the streets. They placed it all on the back of a bakkie. Their parents paid them each R200 for this community work and Kelcey has donated it to one of the St Andrew’s charities.
