Heritage Foundation

Providing for the future takes vision, perseverance and resources.

Join us in being a part of that future

“For over a century St Andrew’s School for Girls has offered an environment for girls to explore and develop their abilities, providing a challenging and imaginative academic programme designed to foster intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. Together with many sporting and cultural programmes and community service projects, integral to the School’s ethos, the St Andrew’s girl was, is and – we hope – always will be a person who believes in herself and has the skills to achieve her goals. As a former parent, I am able to testify that the quality and depth of the educational experience at St Andrew’s is nothing short of remarkable.

It is to secure the future of the School and to allow it to continue to educate many more generations of young women that the Heritage Foundation was established in 2007, the 105th year of the School’s existence.”

Lindsay Robertson, Chairman of the Board of Governors

The aim of the Heritage Foundation

By strategic fundraising, the St Andrew’s Heritage Foundation aims to ensure that the School has the capacity to remain an outstanding school for girls. Long-term financial sustainability is achievable through the formation of an Endowment Fund. The first R1 million donation has given us a great boost but we have a way to go.

The School has identified a number of projects vital to the School’s growth and academic well-being but which require capital funds that cannot be achieved by means such as raising the school fees. Chief among these is attracting and retaining quality educators, in a time of increasing teacher shortages.

The Heritage Foundation aims to raise R25 million for the Endowment Fund and we have in place a committed Board of Governors, chaired by Mr Lindsay Robertson. The Foundation also has a highly experienced financial advisory team to ensure that all capital raised will be wisely invested.

Projects already identified

Improve and enhance existing amenities:
Any school offering a first-class education must be able to keep abreast of modern developments and changes. To be in a position to undertake major projects such as a new boarding house, restoring Bedford Court or providing specialist teaching facilities is vital to the School’s wellbeing.

Attract and retain quality educators:

Outstanding teachers are the mainspring for the provision of the best quality education. We cannot stand by and allow future generations to be compromised because of the growing shortage of well-qualified and committed educators, particularly in the critical areas of mathematics, science and English.

By providing a motivating milieu for staff, this in turn has a motivating effect on learners and significantly contributes towards the happy and caring environment so valued by the School.

Increase bursary funding:
More than 20 years ago the School committed itself to an open, merit-based admissions policy, offering scholarships to needy pupils with ability and potential. That this policy has paid off is evident when the achievements of bursary holders are highlighted, such as Brenda Mashika, the first pupil admitted from the Daveyton Enrichment Project, and currently an air traffic controller.

Ways of giving

There are many ways of giving. These include:

  • A single donation through cheque, cash, credit card or internet transfer
  • Pledging regular payments, monthly, quarterly or annually
  • Leaving a bequest to the School or ceding a life policy
  • Gifts in kind such as shares or property.

Our online pledge form makes giving easy!

There is the added advantage that tax liability on estates is reduced. As a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) no 930031219, all donations to the St Andrew’s Heritage Foundation are tax deductible in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act. Individuals are entitled to deduct up to 10% of taxable income (prior to the deduction of medical expenses) in respect of donations to a registered public benefit organisation.

From the Chairman of the Board of St Andrew’s School for Girls

It is my view that the establishment of the St Andrew’s Heritage Foundation is one of most important initiatives undertaken by the School. Ensuring financial sustainability will allow the School’s dedicated management and educators to focus on their main objective, that of delivering the best possible education.

As a school with a proud history, your support will ensure that St Andrew’s is a school with a secure future.

David Lowry
